Centre objectives:

• To offer young people and adults the opportunity to acquire the basic skills, the confidence and self-esteem necessary to actively participate in society.
• To make learning more inclusive, widen participation among underrepresented groups, eliminate discrimination and promote equality of opportunity for all learners.
• To target additional support for neighbourhoods that consistently demonstrate lower than average rates of participation in learning.
• To contribute to ensuring that the skills gap in the labour market are addressed.
• To raise participation and achievement at levels one and two particularly those under represented in learning and employment.
• To encourage the development and take-up of a continuously expanding range of high quality e-learning opportunities

Best Training is located at 1452 London Road , Norbury. SW16 4BU. The Centre moved in July 06 to its new position on the main A23 route into London excellently served by public trasport. Norbury Rail Station is within a 50 metre walk. It has disabled access and toilets. To locate the centre click here.

Best Training is a private provider originally formed as part of a group of nation-wide franchises of the same name. Established in January 2001 and has been contracted to Learndirect since April 2002.

People attend Best Training from a variety of backgrounds. These include silver surfers, unemployed, lone parents, professionals whilst many are from ethnic minority groups. All have a common goal – to fulfil their potential, learn new skills and improve the quality of their lives at home and in the work place. Priority learners at the Centre are those with low levels of literacy and numeracy skills and those wishing to gain an IT qualification.

The learning opportunities offered are in IT – Home and Office, Skills for Life – Literacy and Numeracy, Professional IT, and Business and Management. The majority of courses are internet based.

About the Learners

Sandra is in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance and is attending the Centre to improve her Numeracy Skills, she has already gained a Level 1 National Qualification in Numeracy. This achievement has given her enormous confidence and the motivation to work towards level 2. Sandra has two children and finds the flexibility of the Centre reduces the barriers to learning. ‘The Centre has increased my confidence, I never thought I would have another chance to learn and I really enjoy what I am doing.’

Nichola was made redundant twelve months ago during which time she attended the Centre to gain a qualification in IT. She chose to study the European Computer Driving Licence and completed this with distinction before being offered a post in local government. ‘The Centre has been of enormous benefit in giving me the opportunity to improve my IT skills and help me get back to work.’

Sarah is Lithuanian and decided to improve her English before applying for university entry. She achieved a Level 2 accreditation in the National Literacy test before studying and completing the European Computer Driving Licence. She has now gained entry to Imperial College, London. Sarah worked at the Centre as a volunteer for three months. ‘The Centre has given me the opportunity to improve my English and I have achieved this, it has given me the confidence to play a part in the community. The Centre is only around the corner from where I live’
